Berwyn Veterans Memorial… A day that goes down in history year after year.

It started years ago, before I had kids I would get up early, meet my Dad in Berwyn to set up registration tables, pop up tents, stuff bags and put out road signs. I myself was never a runner but loved the early morning time with my Dad.

Over the years my boys, my niece and nephew all started to take an interest in different levels. Chris and Dom liked to hang out with Pop. Emily my niece who like me had no interest in running enjoyed being on the cheer squad as her mom and brother ran by. Jack and his Mom were all into running the best time they could. Together we became Team Nudy.  Over the next 5 years Team Nudy grew to include other family and friends.

2012…
A week before the race:

My Dad who at the time had lost his leg to amputation caused by his life long injury in Vietnam decided we needed Team Nudy t-shirts. I can honestly say that it is a day that seems like it was just last week. I suggested Vista print and my Dad designed the t-shirts ordering them in both adult and kids sizes. Looking back I wonder if he didn’t somehow know 2013 would be his last year alive to see Team Nudy participate? He died 4 months later almost to the day.

2013 Mainline Event Planners became a sponsor and Kassie and Kevin joined Team Nudy.

2013 race day was a life changing day and here’s the letter that dad wrote and sent out the very next day….

A Lesson in Determination

Berwyn Veterans Memorial Annual 5k run/walk was held on Saturday, May

18th. Team Nudy members who raced for Veterans were Kassie, Kevin,

Justin, and Joannie, friends of the family. Also entered to run/walk the 5K

was Karen my daughter, Laura my daughter in law, and my grandsons Jack,

Christopher and Dominick, and my granddaughter Emily who cheered at the

finish line. Dominick and Christopher were scheduled to run in the kid’s

race because of their ages (6 and 4). Karen decided to walk the 5k with them

and she would quit if and when they got tired. They all started the race.

After a mile Christopher fell and bruised his leg, getting him a ride with the

“Lady Policeman” to the paramedic station (nothing serious). Karen handed

off Dominick to Kevin and Kassie. Shortly thereafter, they handed him off

to Laura and her son, Jack. Who later handed him off to Justin and Joannie.

NOBODY ever expected this four year old to get this far. Laura and Jack

finished the race and went back to Sugartown Road where Dominick was

still walking!! Four year old Dominick was the last person to cross the

He was so busy walking in the race that he missed the “kid’s race” but was

presented a trophy for his efforts. That afternoon Dominick said to his

mother “Mommy, my legs hurt so bad I can not climb the steps to my

bedroom.” So, Mommy carried him to bed and he slept until the next day.

So the next time you are thinking about quitting, just think of Dominick.

Come cheer us on! We will most likely be the last 3 people (Karen, Dom and Chris) to cross the finish line. Life lesson… Who cares if we are last.. We finished!!!!!! We meet early… You can find us easily… We decorate the back of our shirts… We laugh.. We cry we slowly walk through the streets of Berwyn to honor one of the most amazing men in our lives.
